Ever considered a career in Data Science? Carol told us about her experiences at Kantar.

Our data scientists are at the heart of us being able to do what we do best – and Carol is one of the team. Once she’s done for the day, you might find her reading a book over a cup of hot chocolate with a dash of cinnamon but while in work she’s busy making sure we’re working with best possible data; automating quality check processes to make sure the correct data is analysed and reported back to the clients.

Why did you decide to join Kantar?

What made me decide to join Kantar is the work environment and culture of wanting to win in togetherness. With my desire to grow, Kantar offers an environment that is people centred and opportunity for collaboration is immense.

What is the technology community like?

The technology community at Kantar is very collaborative. The community is always ready for random brainstorming sessions and helpful to give solution suggestions when there is a bottleneck.

It is a free culture centred on your delivery with zero tolerance to micromanagement. Kantar has fostered an environment that is people focussed which means that there are regular training sessions held to better equip us and increase our productivity.

What’s it like being in a woman, in a male dominated field?

As a woman in technology, I feel supported in that I am included. Being a male dominated field, I have always been an equal contributor to projects. I feel well supported by my team because we do not include gender roles but rather base our strengths on merit. The team is very patient and compassionate to every team member despite their race or gender.

What is it like working for a global company?

Working for a global company exposes you to understanding different people and cultures. Beyond the people, working for a global company builds my confidence in what I do. This is because the impact is not without your region/continent but goes beyond to global. In my experience, receiving feedback from people from different parts of the world, enriches the solution through ensuring most edge cases are considered.

What tips would you give people wanting to get into Data Science?

Trust the process. With Artificial Intelligence being a fairly new field, most of the work has been experimental. This might push you to moments of self-doubts and even to levels of insecurities. This is normal. The key is in trusting the process through being patient with yourself and remaining consistent in your learning. Remember that when the going gets tough, the tough get going!
